Have you ever heard of a YAMAHA S-400? Me either.... in 30+ years in the business.... until last week, when we bought 12 pianos from the prestigious Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville TN. I was perplexed. I thought it was a C-3, but I was wrong. It's 3 inches longer, it is hand made by Yamaha, made in the same factory as their 9 foot grands, and it has a partial carbon composite action. (Hammer shanks). Considering C-3 grands of the same era go for $15-20 K, and THIS ONE is hand made, larger, and internally, it is in exceptional shape, it is a BARGAIN at the price I have it listed for. I only found a few old listings online, for around the $25-30K range. I couldn't seem to find a current listing, so they are rare.
So, how does it play? The short answer is EXCEPTIONAL! It isn't quite as bright as a C3, but it is crystal clear, responsive, and POWERFUL! The action is light, and the tech at Vanderbilt had meticulously cared for this instrument. The hammers were changed out in 2015. The regulation is very good. The responsiveness and control of this piano's action is amazing.
The case has a few scratches on it. Nothing to make it an eye sore at all. We have buffed the cabinet and all the brass, and it is probably an 8 to an 8.5 on a 10 scale cosmetically. The internals are a 9+ on a 10 scale. Bottom line is this.... it is an EXCEPTIONAL piano. It's RARE. It's UNDER-PRICED, and if you miss this one, it might be 30+ more years before I have another one in stock. (Now, how was THAT for a sales pitch??!) PLEASE come play it if you have the opportunity. It won't last long.
